Robotics Team
The robotics team at Tempe High was formed to provide students an opportunity to cultivate their interests in engineering and technology, and allows them to gain practical skills in mechanics, electronics, and programming they would not otherwise come into contact with. Those skills would then be applied in the design and construction of robots to fulfil various tasks.
The main activities of the team is to design and construct robots to compete in FIRST Robotics Competition, which is an international event held every March at the Olympic Stadium; and Duel Down Under in July/August at Macquarie University against teams from other parts of Australia and surrounding countries. These competitions offer the students a great opportunity to network with students from other schools, tertiary institutions, and the technology/engineering industry.
The team is free for students to join, however, it needs $6~7000 a year to register for the competitions and purchase equipment and parts. The fundraising activities give the students exposure to media, business planning, and finances. They also allow the students to develop their communications skills through the promotion of the team, and contact with potential sponsors and supporters. Which means that even for students who are not so technically inclined, they are welcomed to participate and be involved.
