Description: Students in Year 7 will participate in a cultural songwriting workshop in collaborationwith local Elders and musicians, based on a guided On Country walk. This will occur in two sessions: Purple, White, Green and Magenta classes in periods 1–\;3, and Red, Blue and Yellow classes in periods 4–\;6. Students will walk from the quad down to the Cooks River, then be ledon a cultural yarning circle by Aunty Julie, her son Raf, and another local knowledge holder nominated by Aunty Julie. They will also be joined by ARIA-award-winning musician Dobby and members of the DET Curriculum Team, including Aboriginal Curriculum Officers. After the cultural walk, students will begin a collaborative songwriting project, working with Dobby and our local knowledge holders to develop a set of lyrics (one set per music class). These lyrics will then form the basis of an assessment task inwhich students compose music around those words and stories. This workshopis part of an ongoing project to implement ICIP best practice in music education across the state. It is an integral element of the new Years 7–\;10 music syllabus and is fully funded by the Department of Education.
