Language study at Tempe High School allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.
Stage 4
The students choose between Japanese and Chinese as the compulsory language component of the school curriculum. They will develop skills in Communication, Language Structures and Conventions, Literary Analysis, Creative Expression, Research Skills and Cultural Awareness. The students enjoy the annual cultural experience at either a Japanese or Chinese Restaurant.
Stage 5
Students may also elect to continue a language course in either Chinese or Japanese. Studying a language course in Stage 5 extends students' ability to communicate and strengthens their understanding of the nature of language, culture, and the processes of communication. Students will develop skills in Enhanced Communication, Literary Studies, Language Convention and Style, Creative Writing, Research and Enquiry Skills, Critical Literacy, Personal Interpretation and Communication, and cultural and Contextual Understanding.
Stage 6
Tempe High School offers the school-based Stage 6 languages: Chinese and Japanese. Additional Languages can be accessed via the NSW School of Languages or the Secondary College of Languages.
Stage 6 Language education emphasizes critical engagement with language, literature, and media, preparing students for effective communication in adulthood, whether in higher education, the workplace, or community involvement. The skills and insights gained during this stage are vital for navigating complex information and expressing ideas clearly and persuasively. Students will develop skills in Advanced Communication, Literary Analysis and Criticism, Language and Context, Creative Writing and Expression, Research and Inquiry, Critical Thinking and Argumentation, Media Literacy, Personal Reflection and Growth.
