English at Tempe High School is a dynamic subject that allows students to engage with exciting and challenging texts and their place in the wider world. Developing proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident communicators; critical and imaginative thinkers; lifelong learners; and informed, active members of society. In English, students have the opportunity to collaborate on and share their love of literature and self-expression and challenge each other in critical thinking. They are encouraged to express themselves through creative and analytical writing while engaging with a range of perspectives and experiences.
Stage 4
In Stage 4 students develop their critical and creative writing skills. They study a range of topics, including The Hero’s Journey, William Shakespeare and Indigenous Perspectives in Film. Students are encouraged to experiment with their creative writing styles and challenge their views of the world.
Stage 5
In Stage 5 students are asked to respond to and compose increasingly difficult texts. They study a range of texts from different cultures and perspectives, including Australian texts, poetry and adaptations and appropriations of William Shakespeare. They are encouraged to question the perspectives presented and reflect on their own views.
Stage 6
English is compulsory in Stage 6. Students have the option to study English at a range of different levels. At Tempe High School, we offer all English courses, including Extension 1 and Extension 2 for the Higher School Certificate.
Students who have a love of and passion for literature are given the opportunity to study Advanced English and Extension 1 which allows them to engage with a more challenging approach to English. They will study a wide range of texts from different contexts and engage critically with all aspects.
Students also have the option to undertake Standard English or English Studies, both of which offer students a space to engage with literature and produce their own work at a level that is suitable for their interests.
